Impact Wrestling is headed back to Orlando for TV tapings at the Impact Zone in January.
I guess they realized that it tougher to tape in Ottawa because it’s not known to be a big wrestling town. The last set of tapings were sad because the attendance was way down with around 350 people for the first couple of days. They had to hire a casting agency and pay actors to attend shows so that it could look halfway decent for TV. If you’ve watched Impact during the last couple of weeks, you’ve probably noticed that the shows are darker than usual because they want to hide the fact that there weren’t many people in attendance. One of the benefits of taping at the Aberdeen Pavillion in Ottawa is that they can get the building at a cheap rate (just $7,759 to rent out the venue for one full day). But the savings may not be worth it if they can’t get fans to attend.
It will be interesting to see if the return to Orlando means that they will reach out to people that were let go. The referees were let go because they wanted to use Canadian refs as a way to cut costs and because of tax breaks they get when they reach a quota on the number of Canadian people working for them.
In recent weeks, Impact has been in the process of “consolidating” their wrestling headquarters to Toronto.
