Wrestle Kingdom 12 results: Kenny Omega vs. Chris Jericho for the IWGP U.S. Championship

One of the most talked about matches in years finally took place at Wrestle Kingdom 12. Chris Jericho vs. Kenny Omega was the co-main event on a loaded show. The match got underway at approximately 6:30 pm eastern time (8:30 pm Tokyo time) and things were crazy from the start.

Omega and Jericho had to be separated before the match started. About a minute later, Omega leaped off the top rope to the outside but Jericho moved and Omega ended up crashing through the announcer’s table. This caused the announcer audio for Kevin Kelly and Don Callis to be knocked out for a minute. After several minutes of brutality at ringside, they finally made their way back into the ring but not for long because they action spilled to ringside again after about a minute or so. Jericho nailed Omega with a powerbomb on the floor and then he brought some chairs into the ring. It’s a No DQ match.

Back in the ring… Jericho wedged a chair in the corner of the ring. Omega fought back with chops to the chest and face but Jericho kept cutting him off. Jericho hit a lionsault and then attempted to pin him but Omega kicked out. Omega got a flurry of offense and then clotheslines Jericho over the top rope. Omega then hit a running senton to the outside near the entrance ramp.

Back in the ring… things settled down into more of a traditional wrestling match with high impact moves. Jericho locked in the Walls of Jericho. Omega was able to pull himself into the corner of the ring and somehow grabbed a spray can to spray it into Jericho’s eyes and break the hold. But Jericho was quickly back on offense again. He rammed Omega’s head several times into the chair that was wedged at ringside in the corner of the ring. Omega was busted open after the shots to the head.

Omega came back at Jericho with snapdragon suplexes. Jericho nailed Omega with a chair after the third suplex. The chair broke when it hit Omega’s face. Jericho nailed Omega repeatedly with the chair on his back. That chair also broke apart so Jericho grabbed another chair but Omega dropkicked the chair into Jericho’s face as Jericho attempted a move off the top. Omega nailed Jericho with a running knee and that caused Jericho to fall off the top rope and through a table at ringside.

They made it back into the ring and this time Omega was on offense. He hit several brutal looking knee triggers onto Jericho’s face. Omega went for the one winged angel but Jericho reversed it into the Walls of Jericho. Omega managed to break the hold by grabbing onto the bottom rope. Jericho went for the codebreaker but Omega countered and hit a couple of knee triggers and then the one winged angel but they were too close to the ropes and Jericho managed to grab the bottom rope to break up the pin attempt.

Omega went for a top rope move but Jericho stopped him and then tried for a top rope hurricanrana but Omega countered it and Jericho’s head hit the turnbuckle. Omega hit a couple of offensive moves but Jericho came back with a codebreaker and a pin attempt. Both men are tired. Jericho tried for a lionsault but Omega countered it and hit the one winged angel onto a chair. Omega got the pin and he retains the title. Awesome match.

Kevin Kelly and Don Callis put over both men. Kelly said that the critics of Omega can go to hell. That was a not so subtle jab at Jim Cornette.
