The pro wrestling world is full of alliances. Some partnerships come out of necessity and others are brought on by other means. Ring Of Honor and New Japan have been working together quite successfully as of late but with NJPW’s interest in establishing their own brand in America some of that might be in question.
ROH’s COO Joe Koff recently spoke to Eric Bischoff on his podcast about how he got started in the business along with how Sinclair Broadcasting distributes the ROH show and sells ad space. The subject of ROH and New Japan’s relationship eventually came up and how it might be affected by NJPW’s quest in becoming a bigger name in the US market.
“I can only speak about our relationship today because I think what they’re trying to do in the United States, we’ll just have to see” Joe Koff said. “But right now we do, we have a very solid relationship with them. We’re going to be participating in their show obviously on July 1 and 2. And interestingly enough Cody Rhodes will be the first free agent to ever get a big title shot in Ring Of Honor this Friday night on our pay-per-view, he’s also having an IWGP title shot within a week.”
“We are working with them in the Fall. They’re going to be part of our UK tour which is going to have CMLL plus New Japan. As far as I know, that relationship (between ROH and NJPW) is sound. I think they’re gonna want to see how they do domestically — as they should.”
“But you know, we’re kinda mixed together and I think that relationship will probably — I’m hoping will hold at that level. But right now my relationship with them/our relationship with them is as solid as its ever been. I don’t wanna cast any kind of doom — I just don’t know.”
