Fans that were watching WrestleMania were shocked when Brock Lesnar defeated Roman Reigns to retain the WWE Universal Championship. After all, word had already gotten out that Lesnar was looking at going back to UFC and Dana White confirmed that plans were in place for his next fight.
Apparently, the big swerve wasn’t just on the fans because virtually everyone in WWE, including the writers, were kept in the dark about the finish of the match.
Dave Meltzer talked about this on Tuesday’s Wrestling Observer Radio. “Almost nobody knew. I don’t know how many people on the inside knew. I know that none of the writers knew. I know that even the leading producers didn’t know. They all thought that Roman Reigns was winning the championship. Roman Reigns was winning the championship [but] I’m not sure when that changed but it was late. It could have been in the last week or so. It was not at the last minute, though.”
Lesnar’s new WWE deal is short-term so he could only be around for a few more months. It makes sense for him because he can’t fight for at least 6 months because he needs to serve out the rest of his MMA suspension from his previous drug test failure. I know that there had been talk of a potential Lesnar vs. Lashley match at SummerSlam match so, perhaps, that could be his last night before he leaves to go fight again.
Paul Heyman’s deal is tied into Lesnar’s deal so he will be around as long as Lesnar is around. It’s unclear what the goal is by keeping the title on Lesnar but they could have him drop it to Reigns at the Greatest Royal Rumble show in a couple of weeks.
