There are so many questions surrounding Brock Lesnar and the Universal Championship. As previously noted, Dave Meltzer has been reporting the idea is for Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns at SummerSlam but that has not been set in stone.
Well, it looks like Lesnar might not wrestle at SummerSlam at all. It turns out that he has not been booked for the show, which is odd, to say the least.
Mike Johnson said the following on PWInsider Elite: “I am hearing Brock may not even work SummerSlam and we may not see Brock again until later in the year. Which is madness if you think about the belt.”
Johnson added, “And it may be that they only have a couple of dates left on Brock and they’re just trying to spend as much time as they can. If they want him more often then maybe they should sign him to more dates.”
On Friday’s Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez said the following:
“Well, here’s what I know. Dave and I have been talking about this for a couple of weeks. Brock has one match left on his current deal and the original idea was SummerSlam.”
Alvarez added, “Right now, I should say as of two days ago because it may have changed in the last day or so [but] as of two days ago Brock Lesnar was not booked by SummerSlam.”
Alvarez pointed out that a lot can happen in a month and a half. The original idea for Extreme Rules was a 6-pack challenge to determine Lesnar’s next contender. At some point last week, Vince McMahon changed his mind.
Alvarez continued, “The situation is this. This is the last that I heard and things can change. Vince wants Roman Reigns to get cheered. It’s not happening.” WWE has done everything including trying to paint Lesnar as a guy that only shows up when he wants because he doesn’t care about the fans but that hasn’t helped to get Reigns over with fans.
It will be interesting to see what the direction is for SummerSlam because it will be strange for one of their biggest shows of the year to not include a match for the Universal Championship. At this point, WWE hopes that fans will get really upset at Lesnar. We’ll see if that works but my gut tells me that there is nothing they can do to get fans behind Reigns.
