Former WWE/Impact Wrestling star Shelly Martinez announced via YouTube that she will be retiring after this year. Many fans might remember her from her run in WWE’s ECW revival in 2006 as a vampire character named Ariel with Kevin Thorn. You might also remember her as the valet for the original incarnation of LAX.
Martinez signed with WWE’s developmental system in 2005 and was released in 2006. The story she has told is that there was an issue after she got involved in an argument that was going on between Bautista and Melina Perez. In a 2013 interview with the VOC Nation podcast, she said, “Batista and I had an aggressive conversation backstage and he said something that were unnecessary and uncalled for. If it was outside of wrestling, I’m pretty sure it could have been a legal problem for both Batista and WWE. But this is wrestling, and it’s a man’s business, so I fired back and they fired me. I was just a vampire girl in the fake ECW; he was Batista, and they wanted to accommodate him.”
She was signed by Impact Wrestling in 2007 and shortly thereafter made her debut as part of LAX with Konnan, Homicide, and Hernandez. She quit the company to film an Italian horror movie and she would continue wrestling on independent shows. Her last appearance for a national company was when she was brought back to work on the One Night Only: Knockouts Knockdown 4 pay-per-view.
In the video below, she explains why she is leaving the wrestling business later this year. “I’ve slowed down a lot but I haven’t retired yet but based on me just keep trying to make freaking wrestling work..” She has two more appearances booked before she is officially done with wrestling. She added, “The time has definitely come and one of the signs that I know that wrestling is done for me is a couple. I’ve been having a real hard time these last couple of months and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ has been promoted and now is out. For those of you that know that me and Dave Bautista got in a fight backstage, that’s how I got fired – so it’s been interesting for me to drive around time and I see Dave Bautista’s face everywhere.” She added, “there’s a lot of healing that I did through all of that but I was finding myself getting depressed. I would wonder why am I depressed and I would backtrack my day and a lot of times it was triggered by Bautista.” She then said that if she didn’t get fired then she probably wouldn’t live where she lives now and she probably wouldn’t have met her boyfriend if she had stayed with WWE. So, she is thankful for what she has now but she is “tired of the BS and I’m tired of the fake and phoniness” from the wrestling business.
She also talked about the new LAX. She was surprised and hoped that someone would speak up to bring her back but she is not upset and she is moving on. She praised Diamante and said that she is probably a better fit for what Impact is looking for. She ended by sending positive vibes to Bautista.
