During the Kickoff Show, Tye Dillinger asked Daniel Bryan to add him to tonight’s United States Championship match. Bryan granted him his wish so now AJ Styles will defend the title in a Triple Threat Match. Both teams immediately went under the ring to look for weapons and they introduced kendo sticks, chains, and chairs into the match.
Shelton Benjamin and Chad Gable vs. The Hype Bros.
Benjamin and Gable got the win after a double-team clothesline on Ryder (he was Benjamin’s shoulder). Gable got the pin on Ryder and Rawley looked frustrated after the match.
New Day cut a promo before The Usos were introduced. They started with this match because they are guaranteed to kick things off hot and because they want to spread out the two HIAC matches on the show. Big E and Xavier wrestled while Kofi Kingston was locked outside of the cell and watched from ringside. Within a couple of minutes, fans were already chanting “this is awesome” after Big E did a running dive through the ropes onto one of The Usos up against the cage. Xavier broke a trombone on Jimmy and then beat him down with a cowbell. Jey launched a chair into Xavier’s head and that turned the tide of the match for The Usos. Later, there was a spot with Big E on Jimmy’s shoulders at ringside. Jey did a running dive through the ropes and drove Big E into the cage. They followed up with a pair of splashes off the top rope onto Big E in the middle of the ring but Big E kicked out. The Usos tied Xavier’s arms with handcuffs around the top of the ringside post and then proceeded to hit him with the kendo stick. Kofi could only watch from outside of the cage and Big E was knocked out in the ring. A couple of minutes later, The Usos hit a double splash on Big E but Xavier saved the match before the ref counted to 3. Woods, with his hands still handcuffed, tried to fight off both Usos but he took repeated kendo stick shots. The Usos set him up in the middle of the ring with chairs on top and then splashed him. Usos win the titles for the 5th time.
Randy Orton vs. Rusev
Nothing special about this match. It was a basic and by the numbers wrestling match. Orton won the match with an RKO Outta Nowhere after slipping out of an Accolade submission attempt.
United States Championship – Triple Threat Match
AJ Styles vs. Baron Corbin vs. Tye Dillinger
Corbin got a lot of offense on Dillinger during the first few minutes of the match while Styles was out at ringside after being driven back-first into one of the ring posts. Towards the end of the match, Styles almost won the match with the Calf Crusher on Dillinger but Corbin pulled Dillinger out of the ring. The finish was Styles hitting the Phenomenal forearm on Dillinger. Corbin ran in and kicked Styles hard and that got him out of the ring. Corbin then stole the pin to become champion.
They showed a video package before the match and they mentioned Ric Flair’s recent hospitalization. Basically, Charlotte is looking to win the Smackdown Women’s title in honor of her dad. Ric Flair watched this match from his home in Atlanta.
The story of this match was that Charlotte had to work this match with an injured (storyline injury) left leg and she did everything to fight through the pain. Natalya was able to lock in the sharpshooter but Charlotte powered out of it and caused Natalya to hit the back of her head on the bottom turnbuckle. The announcers kept saying that Charlotte was bascially working on one leg and it was amazing that she was able to continue. Charlotte hit a moonsault on Natalya at ringside but that that put more pain on Charlotte’s left leg. Natalya attacked Charlotte with a steel chair and that caused the referee to call for the DQ. Charlotte wins by DQ but Natalya retains.
If Ric Flair can travel, I would not be shocked if he made his return next month in the corner of Charlotte. This is probably the set up for a rematch at Survivor Series.
The Fashion Files
The case was solved…or so they thought. The Ascension revealed that they wanted “2B” Breezango’s friends. However, a briefcase appeared by the door and it revealed that they had a new case on their hands so this continues on Tuesday night.
Jinder Mahal (Champion) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
Mahal retained the title after the referee kicked The Singh Brothers out of the ringside area. It was a relatively clean win with Mahal hitting the Coloss finisher. Click here for more details on what happened during this match.
Bobby Roode vs. Dolph Ziggler
Dolph Ziggler came out to no music and no special lighting to prove a point that he didn’t need an elaborate entrance. This match was positioned as the buffer match in between the WWE Championship match and the main event of the show, the Hell in a Cell match between Shane McMahon and Kevin Owens. There was a sequence late in the match with Ziggler rolling up Roode and holding onto the tights. Roode reversed it and rolled up Ziggler while holding the tights but as the bell rang, Ziggler hit the zig zag on Roode. It looks like this feud will continue. Corey Graves said that even in defeat, Ziggler was the last man standing.
Hell in a Cell Match – Falls Count Anywhere
Kevin Owens vs. Shane McMahon
This was an insane match. They fought about half of the match in the ring and they crashed through tables, steel steps, etc. but the match moved out of the cage when McMahon cut the lock with bolt cutters. Eventually, they made it to the top of the cell and they fought on top for several minutes. Owens tried to climb down but ended up crashing through one of the tables. McMahon could have ended the match there but decided to place Owens on a second table and then proceeded to jump off the top of the cage but Owens seemingly moved. The replay showed that it was actually that Sami Zayn pulled Owens off the table. So, Zayn has turned heel and everyone (including Owens) were shocked. Owens was helped to the back by trainers and referees and Shane has to be taken out on a stretcher. Click here to read more details on what happened during this match.
