Jim Ross says reports of Brock Lesnar’s original gimmick in WWE as a gay tough guy are ridiculous

It was reported last week in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that back in 2002 that WWE was looking for someone to be a tough guy that was also gay. WWE had Brock Lesnar planned for that spot. The idea was for Lesnar to be portrayed as a kick ass main eventer. Dave Meltzer notes that the idea was for the person to be Lesnar when he made his debut that year.

The idea came about when Brian Solomon, who was a WWE magazine writer at the time, pitched the idea as it would blow away the fan base and everyone to have an unstoppable hyper-masculine ass kicker revealing himself to be gay, and be pushed as a top babyface. It was pitched to Stephanie McMahon. Some of the older agents thought the idea was terrible and it was dropped. WWE later gave the gay gimmick to Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo.

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated the Q&A section of his website recently and responded to the rumors.

“Another ridiculous tale from the IWC. That one is truly absurd,” Ross wrote.
