There has been talk of doing a womenโs Royal Rumble match in January, according to the Wrestling Observer newsletter. Thereโs no word on how serious the talks are but itโs another positive step for the women. I think itโs a great idea and itโs another way to elevate the womenโs championships since, in theory, the winner of the womenโs Royal Rumble would be getting a shot at one of the womenโs titles on Raw or Smackdown Live.
Last January, during an interview with the Montgomery Advertiserโs Piledrive podcast, Bayley seemed optimistic about it but she feels that WWE would need to bring up more women to the main roster. She said, โI kind of honestly think we need a few more girls to do something like that because the guys have 30 men. We donโt have many girls. Even if it was Raw and SmackDown combined, I donโt think it would make it 20. If we had more girls brought in, maybe like NXT girls, that would be really cool and I think it would be a lot of fun.โ
In an interview with The Amarillo Globe-News, Becky Lunch was asked about the possibility of a womenโs Royal Rumble match. She said, โI think thereโll definitely be a time where the women get their own Royal Rumble. When you look at the fact that in July there is the Mae Young Classic taking place between 32 women. Then you have the women in NXT and the women on both brands. I think itโs a year or two away from having our own Royal Rumble, then maybe our tag titles. The sky is the limit.โ
You have to give credit to WWE for what theyโve done with the women in the last couple years. Yes, there is still a ton of work to do and they have come up with some head-scratching ideas for people like Bayley, but the women are no longer treated like eye candy and they are getting more TV time and more storylines. Weโve seen women main event Raw and women featured in Hell in a Cell and Money in the Bank.
There has also been talk of doing a womenโs tag team tournament on the WWE Network. It would be similar to the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament.
