Longtime WWE lead announcer Michael Cole talked about an incident involving WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler. WWE had these two commentators feud and eventually had a match at WrestleMania 27 in 2011.
During this period, WWE had Cole as a heel announcer and it went on for a lengthy amount of time. That all changed on September 10, 2012 during Raw at the Bell Centre in Montreal once Lawler legitimately collapsed at the announcers table during a match as he suffered a heart attack.
Cole would then have to provide updates throughout the show. Once this incident happened, Cole no longer portrayed a heel on WWE television.
During a recent appearance, while speaking to Pat McAfee on the Pat McAfee Show, Cole explained how he thinks WWE would still have him performing as a heel to this day on television if this incident didn’t happen.
“We can complain as much as we want but there’s nothing better than going out there to perform and make people smile,” said Cole. “A highlight of my career was when I had a heel run. The first time in the history of wrestling, the lead guy was a bad guy to the point where we had a match at WrestleMania. It was the worst match ever, but it was WrestleMania. I’d still be a heel today if Jerry Lawler didn’t have a heart attack.”
