Kofi Kingston will challenge for the WWE Championship at Fastlane

This week’s episode of WWE SmackDown Live was headlined by a 6-man tag team match featuring Kofi Kingston, AJ Styles and Jeff Hardy taking on WWE Champion Daniel Bryan, Samoa Joe and Randy Orton. Before the match, Bryan said that none of the men in this match would get a title shot at Fastlane because he beat all of them at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view.

However, Kingston was able to pin Bryan. Shane McMahon walked announced that Kingston would face Bryan for the WWE Championship at Fastlane.

News about this match broke on Tuesday afternoon as Dave Meltzer reported that plans changed for the Fastlane main event. As of Monday, Kingston was not in the plans to face Bryan at Fastlane but the crowd reaction at Elimination Chamber and the outpouring of support on social media caused Vince McMahon to change his mind. For what it’s worth, the local advertising for Fastlane had Bryan defending the WWE Championship against Styles and Joe in a Triple Threat Match so that was likely the original plan for the show.

Here is the updated card for WWE Fastlane:

WWE Championship
Daniel Bryan (Champion) vs. Kofi Kingston

SmackDown Tag Team Championship
The Usos (Champions) vs. Shane McMahon and The Miz

Also, based on what went down on SmackDown Live, it looks like Mandy Rose will challenge Asuka for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. The match has not been announced yet but Rose pinned Asuka in a non-title match this week.

WWE Fastlane will take place on March 10 from the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
