Former WWE Universal Champion Kevin Owens has been inserted into the top feud on SmackDown Live in his return to television. Owens will challenge WWE Champion Daniel Bryan for the strap at the Fastlane pay-per-view event on March 10, 2019 at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio that will air on the WWE Network.
As seen on this week’s episode of SmackDown Live in Charlotte, NC at the Spectrum Center on the USA Network, Owens returned to television where the match announcement was made. Later in the show, Owens teamed up with Kofi Kingston, who was originally slated to challenge for the title next, to defeat the team of Bryan and Erick Rowan. The finish of the match saw Owens hit the Stunner to pick up the win in the main event of the blue branded show.
This is a finisher made famous by WWE Hall of Famer Steve Austin. Owens previously used a Stunner on Seth Rollins back in August during a Raw match and after seeing that Austin tweeted about how seeing the move was “very interesting.”
Also, Austin made it known after Owens used it during the 2017 Royal Rumble pay-per-view against Roman Reigns that “I guess I gotta teach @FightOwensFight how to do a GD Stone Cold Stunner. Put some stink on it, kid.”
Owens tweeted to Austin after SmackDown Live by writing the following:
