The brainbuster is no longer banned in WWE. Over the years, Vince McMahon has banned moves that he felt were too dangerous. The piledriver, for example, is one of them and the tombstone can only be used by The Undertaker.
But, as you saw at Extreme Rules, Scott Dawson used the brainbuster during The Revival vs. The Usos match for the Raw Tag Team Titles. The move was popularized in the 80s in the WWF by Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson but fans haven’t seen it on WWE programming in many years.
Bryan Alvarez noted that the move is no longer banned and he told a story about McMahon seeing an online clip that went viral of someone doing the Canadian Destroyer and McMahon decided that there needed to be more “cool” things like that on his shows.
“I wish I remembered the details but the point of this is that someone showed Vince a clip of the Canadian Destroyer,” Bryan Alvarez said during his Extreme Rules recap on WrestlingObserver.com. Alvarez added, “Vince said something to the effect of ‘why don’t we do that cool sh** on our show?”
It was pointed out to McMahon that he banned piledrivers so that is why the Canadian Destroyer was not being used in matches. McMahon then decreed that the Canadian Destroyer is not banned anymore and that could be why we are seeing moves like the brainbuster (see below) on WWE programming. The Canadian Destroyer has been around for many years but was introduced to WWE viewers back in January when Rey Mysterio did it during a match against Andrade on SmackDown Live.
