Bill Goldberg’s name has come up again and there are rumors going around about him possibly returning to face Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam.
The rumors got started because Ziggler has been mentioning Goldberg in some of his recent promos. On SmackDown Live, Ziggler noted how Raw Reunion was embarrassing as Goldberg in a wrestling ring. Given that it was the USA Network’s idea to do the reunion show and it was not Vince McMahon’s idea the jab at the Raw Reunion show might also indicate that McMahon was not too thrilled with having to do that show. On the July 15th episode of Raw, Ziggler said that his loss at Extreme Rules was “Goldberg bad.”
Despite the Goldberg mentions, there are no plans for him to return to a WWE ring.
Dave Meltzer noted in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the fact that Ziggler was scripted to take shots at Goldberg in his promos tells you that there are bad feelings internally after the match with The Undertaker at Super ShowDown.
Meltzer also noted that he asked a few weeks ago about Goldberg being on the first SmackDown on FOX and he was given a pretty emphatic “no.”
I asked someone in WWE about Goldberg and I was told that people in management did not say anything to him directly but there were people upset with him because he came off reckless at Super ShowDown and being reckless is what led to his concussion and his match with The Undertaker falling apart. One person I spoke to told me that they were more upset about the fact that Goldberg could have seriously injured Taker. The feeling is that the match was seen as a disaster and Taker got equal blame for things going wrong when, in fact, the match only fell apart because Goldberg concussed himself.
Here’s what Ziggler said on Tuesday night about Goldberg:
