Cody Rhodes opens up on Jeff Cobb’s status with AEW

Cody Rhodes has opened up on where things stand with Jeff Cobb in AEW.

Cobb is slated to make his AEW in-ring debut on Wednesday in Atlanta, Georgia in a match against Jon Moxley. This comes after he made his promotional debut last week following the main event of Moxley vs. Santana. This is where the Inner Circle attacked Moxley before bringing out Cobb for him to lay out Moxley with his finisher.

It’s been reported that Cobb hasn’t signed a full-time deal with AEW as he has plans to wrestle for AEW, ROH, and NJPW right now while being a free agent.

Rhodes talked about Cobb during a conference call with media outlets on Tuesday. Rhodes said Cobb is working for other promotions and how he’s a big fan of Cobb because he likes shooters in wrestling. Rhodes sees Cobb as a tank and a special athlete.

“So I think honestly, to be transparent with you, it’s in gestation. I would hope that he maybe pursue the longer [tenure] with AEW but I don’t want it to impede on anything he’s doing in his soul, if that makes sense. If he wants to travel the globe and do all kinds of stuff, have at it.

That’s one of the great things about AEW, there’s no blanket contracts. Everybody’s contract is different about what they can do, where they can go, and Tony Khan has tailored and contoured contracts to speak to your sensibility. ‘Hey, if this independent means a lot to me’ or ‘going to Wrestle Kingdom means a lot to me,’ whatever it may be, it’s door’s open and we’re open for business. But Jeff, I’m sorry, I’ll just have to keep it vague with him as well because honestly, we don’t know just yet.”

Rhodes added that they have Cobb for Wednesday’s show and he would love to see Cobb in a more long-term deal with AEW.
