WWE starting to cut back on heavily scripted promos?

One of the biggest changes in the last decade in WWE is the company depending on writers to not only come up with ideas for storylines on WWE programming but also writing scripts for its talent to use in their promos.

WWE Hall Of Famer Jerry Lawler recently appeared on The Steve Austin Show where he spoke about a wide range of topics.

During the interview, he talked about Paul Heyman being the executive director of Raw that sees him as the lead writer of the show but Vince McMahon has the final say on the script.

Lawler claimed that with Heyman being in charge, it as allowed talent to get the opportunity to be themselves instead of the way it used to be where they were predetermined by the writers or creative

“They’re giving the guys a chance to be themselves just like [Austin was] back when [Austin] became ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin. Nobody was telling you, ‘oh, this is how it [has] got to be.’ [Austin was himself] and [he] was given that opportunity and [Austin] took it.”

Lawler then told a story about a young writer giving WWE Hall Of Famer Ric Flair a scripted promo one time.

“I thought, ‘oh my God, what on Earth has happened to the business [of professional wrestling]?'” Lawler laughed, “that’s the part that I don’t get.”

“I really do think a little bit of that is changing now with Heyman in charge of RAW. Yeah, he’s letting guys – like [Austin] said, giving them some bullet points and letting them go on their own.”
