Cody Rhodes talks about Ricky Starks, referees in AEW not enforcing the rules

Ahead of tonight’s AEW Fyter Fest, Cody Rhodes spoke with the crew at “Busted Open Radio” to talk about the next couple of week’s show shows and other AEW-related topics.

Here are some highlights:

Cody talking about Ricky Starks: “He is such a unique example. The open challenge was not intended on, let’s give people a job. If you win the title, of course, you’re going to become a member of our roster. In the case of Ricky Starks, as soon as I got in the ring, I looked at him and thought, man, he’s got a swag. He has a presence that we are missing in some areas here. Tony Khan thought the exact same thing. As soon as he walked back through the curtain, that was a done deal. It was something that I had not planned for. I was really proud of Ricky Starks and being proud of the open challenge for being able to do that.”

Bully Ray asked Cody about the referees not enforcing the rules and if he sees this as an issue: “Every week we discuss as far as our coaches are concerned, Jerry Lynn, Billy Gunn, Dustin and Dean Malenko, we talk about what you just mentioned. But, I will say, my generation is kind of quick to bite back when people start talking about the rules. Or when people start talking about psychology and things of that nature. I liken it back, and this is an extreme example, but Harley Race in St. Louis is taking backdrops. Nobody else on the card is taking backdrops. All these wrestlers, especially these older luminary wrestlers are telling him how dumb he is. He should conserve his body and how a high spot like that isn’t worth it. You fast forward to 2020 and there is a lot of rule-breaking, and there is a lot of high impact, high octane, dinosaurs doing shooting star presses off the stage type stuff. When the types that get on the internet, and we are just talking about the twitter world, the types that get on there and bury the modern product, have the opposite effect.”

During the show. Bully Ray and David Lagreca also talked about Terry Funk, NXT vs. AEW and much more.
