Edge explains the old school aspects of “The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” with Randy Orton

Edge was interviewed on Peter Rosenberg’s “Cheap Heat” podcast for ESPN. Edge discussed his return to the ring, his match with Randy Orton, the injury at Backlash and much more.

Here are some highlights:

Edge was asked if he was happy with the “Greatest Match Ever”: “I was very happy with it and what I did is I threw that Greatest Wrestling Match ever out of the equation almost as soon as Vince told me. There is no such thing. It is completely subjective. I would guarantee you that all three of us would have their idea of what the greatest wrestling match ever is. Who is the greatest band ever? What’s the greatest song ever? What’s the greatest movie ever? There is no such thing, so when you can lose that and realize, oh, this is just a promotional tool, ah, I got it. But, what I wanted to do was try to make it a love letter to wrestling. A love letter to this thing that I have loved my entire life. So, how do we do that? Alright, well, let’s have Howard Finkel introduce this. Let’s have the old MSG microphone. Let’s have old school introductions with Charles Robinson in a long-sleeved shirt and a bow tie explaining the rules to us. I wanted to try these pickup shots after the fact to see if they would work. I don’t think they did, but, apparently, Vince loved them and a couple of them got put in. I wasn’t a huge fan of that, but beyond that, I was really happy with the fact that we were able to go out there and have a 48 or 50-minute match, whatever it was, with barely an audience and try to pull this thing off. If anyone got too bogged down on, well I don’t know where it was rated, you missed the point man. It’s really just supposed to be a love letter to wrestling and something to try and enjoy when nothing else is happening in the world except for a lot of really bad things. That’s all it was. To be able to go out there in 48 minutes in essentially my second match back, I’m proud of that. I feel like I didn’t really miss a step even though I tore my triceps.’

When did the injury happen: “On the RKO. Talking to the doctor once I woke up from surgery, he said there is a good chance you went into it with it partially torn already. My elbow had been bugging me for about a month. What I learned from this is that I need to learn to listen to that from now on. I’m not 25. I’m not 35. What I need to realize now is if my elbow is aching and burning, there is probably something going on. I’m just thankful I made it through the match, to be perfectly honest. Contrary to reports, we did it once straight through. I made it through it and then after that, we did four pick up shots after we filmed the entire match. We did the match straight through.”
