Vince McMahon helped Ray Rougeau during his divorce, McMahon’s reaction to Jacques and Dynamite Kid fight in 1989

The Two Man Power Trip of Wrestling podcast welcomes Raymone Rougeau this week as their special guest. Raymond is one half of the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers along with his brother Jacques.

The interview covers Vince McMahon, the Rougeaus vs. the Hart Foundation, their gimmick, the mini flags, Jimmy Hart, their ring jackets, their theme music, heel heat, being from Memphis, the infamous fight between Jacques and Dynamite Kid and much more.

Here are some highlights from the interview:

Raymond Rougeau shared a story of why he respects Vince McMahon:  “I always liked Vince.  A lot of people have had a lot of different things to say about Vince.  Personally, I only have respect for the man.  I consider him a friend.  I went through a divorce back in 1997.  It was a bit of a difficult time at that point. Vince heard about it.  We were at a PPV in New England.  We were in a production meeting in the afternoon.  As we left, Vince said, Ray, how are you doing?  I said fine, how are you?  He said, can we chat later? I would like to have a talk with you.  I said ok.  A little while later, he took me into his office, just him and I.  He said I heard you were going through a rough time right now.  I said, yes I am Vince and thanks for asking.  He stayed there talking with me to make me feel good and cheering me up.  I remember Kevin Dunn knocked on the door and it was a live PPV that night.  He said, ‘Vince, I need to talk to you because we have a problem.’  He said, ‘not right now.  I’m with Ray.’  We are there another 15 minutes, he knocks again and Kevin said, ‘Vince we need to talk to you.’  Vince said, ‘I told you, Raymond is my priority right now.’  He said, ‘I don’t want to be bothered.’  I told him ‘you can go take care of business’ and he said, ‘no, you are my priority right now.’  For me, that blew me away.  He has a live PPV in a couple of hours and his priority is my well being.  He’s running a multi-million dollar business, he’s live on the air on a PPV in a couple hours.  For me, I never forgot that.  At one point, the third time, Kevin said ‘please, we need to talk to you.’  I said ‘Vince, go ahead.’  Vince gave me his home phone number.  He said ‘if you need to talk, you call me.  If it’s 1, 2, 3 in the morning, that’s the phone next to my bed and said, you call me if you need to talk.’”

Ray talked about his fight with Dynamite Kid:  “When Dynamite attacked my brother in Miami, we wondered what happened.  We didn’t have a clue.  I told my brother there has to be a comeback.  We set up the comeback.  It was done a week later in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  It’s a matter of respect.  We found Dynamite Kid.  My brother did it on his own.  I was just there to make sure nobody jumped on him.  When it happened, Pat Patterson was talking to me and I wasn’t listening but I didn’t want to turn or else he would suspect something.  When it was done, Pat said, hey stop this.  I grabbed Pat by the neck, pushed him into the wall and said ‘butt out of this,  this is none of your concern.’

After that, when the guys came out, Dynamite had lost his teeth and all that.  I went to see Vince and said, ‘I need to talk to you.’  He said, ‘I’m not done with Hulk yet.’  I said, ‘no, we need to talk to you now.’  I pointed to my brother’s head and it was full of blood and he said ‘oh sh*t.’  Hulk said, ‘I’m out of here, you go in.’  I told Vince, ‘I know you heard what happened.  Things have been settled and if you want to fire us right now, I can live with that.  But, we could not live with the way things were.  If there had not been a comeback, I would have had to look at myself for the rest of my life in the mirror and I would have to look down.  Right now, I can look at myself in the mirror and if you fire us, I can still look at myself in the mirror.’  He said, ‘no, I don’t want to fire you guys, but I need this to stop.’”
