Jim Ross on why he hated the Taz bullying storyline in 2000, why he is not a fan of intergender wrestling

This week on “Grilling JR” with Jim Ross and Conrad Thompson, they cover WWE SummerSlam 2000 and all of the big news items from around that time.

The topics include the main event for the WWE Champion between The Rock, Triple H, and Kurt Angle. They also talk about other notable matchups like Kane vs. The Undertaker in a No DQ match, Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho in a two-out-of-three falls match, the TLC tag team match featuring The Dudleyz, The Hardys and Edge & Christian, and much more.

Here are just a couple of highlights from the show:

Jim Ross gave his opinion of the angle when Taz bullied him on WWE TV in 2000:  “I didn’t think much of it at all.  I didn’t like it.  It meant nothing.  It was a television angle.  It was never meant to draw any money because those guys were never going to be at the top of the card on this roster.  Lawler was one of the greatest workers of all time.  What’s the payoff?  There was no real payoff other than we have to talk about J.R’s Bell’s Palsy so we can bring more attention to his paralyzed face and the fact he couldn’t smile.  That’s the underscore of that because that is just good TV.  That’s good sh*t.  It’s not good sh*t.  It’s shi* alright.  It was the drizzling sh*t is what kind of shi*t it was.  It wasn’t a nice prepared saw log.  It was the drizzling sh*ts.  It was everywhere.  I didn’t like it because number one, I didn’t think it was very good in that world.  What’s the payoff going to be?  The thing is that when you are doing that with me, you’re taking time from another talent that is in the back that is waiting for their opportunity to get on television. I didn’t like it.  I didn’t think it was in good taste.  The positive side is that it got Taz on TV.  It got Lawler on TV.”

Ross was asked about the intergender matches WWE was having in 2000:  “It was too much aggression.  I’m not a fan of intergender wrestling.  People will say, what about Tessa Blanchard?  She wrestled men in Impact.  Ok, well that’s what Impact wanted to do.  That doesn’t mean I have to like it.  I thought it was illogical when we had Chyna doing it.  She didn’t want to wrestle women and she had influence in the office.  Vince was willing to go along with it.  I thought it was silly.  It’s just unbelievable in my view.  I wasn’t a big fan of it.  I thought it was a little too much quite frankly.”
