Matt Hardy was interviewed this week for Chris Van Vliet’s YouTube channel/podcast.
Hardy talked about his exit from WWE and his decision to sign with AEW, why the Broken character works better with a crowd, the chairshot he took from Sammy Guevara, his favorite TLC match, how he created the Broken character, his “DELETE” catchphrase, thoughts on cinematic matches after “The Final Deletion,” Darby Allin and much more.
Here are some highlights:
Matt Hardy was asked how he is doing after he got hit in the face with a chair in a match with Sammy Guevara: “It’s still numb. It’s still sore. I had really bad headaches the first few days which were really annoying. I was really lucky I wasn’t concussed badly. I was able to hit the chair a little bit and slowed it down. If I wasn’t able to slow it down, I’m sure it would have knocked me completely unconscious. But even knocking it down and slowing it down, it still split me open. I needed 13 stitches. It did some damage to the back of my neck. It whiplashed my neck. My neck was banged up for a couple weeks. I had a couple weeks off and I’m back and ready to go again.”
Hardy commented on why going to AEW made the most sense: “For me, AEW made the most sense. I could see Vince and WWE, they already had it in their mind. Vince was ready to move me from being a talent to working backstage, being a producer and giving back and teaching other guys behind the scenes. I’m very happy to do that, but later on. These last few years I have left to do this physically, I want to do it. I want to enjoy it. The whole reason I got into pro wrestling in the first place was because I love the idea of performing and being a pro wrestler. I don’t want to give that up right now. Even though they offered to do other things after I expressed my concern, I know in my head they already made up their mind how they see me. I knew I needed to go somewhere else. AEW was the best case scenario for me. The Young Bucks, I’m very good friends with those guys. Here, there is such a refreshing creative liberty and also I can create a freedom where I have input and I really have a hand in the direction my career goes in. I’ve been enjoying this. This is a great place. On top of being able to perform and do what I want to do in my last few years, I can still help young talent as well.”
