WWE booked WWE Champion Drew McIntyre vs. Bill Goldberg at the upcoming Royal Rumble event during the closing segment of Monday’s episode of Raw.
It turns out that the decision for the match was made this past Saturday, according to Dave Meltzer on The Wrestling Observer Radio.
Meltzer mentioned that this is the main event of the Royal Rumble. The reason for this match booking comes down to WWE realizing that they had nobody ready to challenge McIntyre for the title at this show. Thus, they felt Goldberg Goldberg was the best choice.
If you recall, Goldberg had previously called out WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns for a match at WrestleMania 37 and that was reportedly the direction the company was heading towards. Now, with Goldberg challenging McIntyre, there’s no word yet on whether this match will still take place at WrestleMania 37. It should be noted that Goldberg is required to work two matches per year.
“So this was decided on Saturday because if you’re wondering why did Bill do all this build-up for Roman Reigns if he’s going to wrestle McIntyre and it’s like that is your answer. It wasn’t a swerve, it wasn’t to throw people off, it was because they have nobody ready for anything.”
