Former XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck had filed a lawsuit against Vince McMahon, the ex-owner of the XFL, for wrongful termination.
Luck states that he was fired without cause and under the terms of his contract he is owed his pay for the remaining three years on the contract, which has a personal guarantee attached to it by McMahon. Luck wants more than $23 million of his contract in addition to damages and attorney fees.
USA Today reported Friday that McMahon has countersued Luck for nearly $600,000. He did so on Thursday in Connecticut federal court. The WWE Chairman states Luck defied his orders regarding his league personnel decisions and luck was derelict in his duties when the pandemic hit in March.
The big point for McMahon was Luck’s decisions on specific players that defied McMahon’s edict that they are “quality football players with good character.” One of the players listed is Antonio Callaway due to his history of being out of the NFL over a substance-abuse violation and a prior suspension due to credit card fraud.
Callaway was brought into the XFL and signed by Tampa Bay. He never played a game due to injury but is still owed $120,000 as a signing bonus in addition to worker’s compensation.
The $572,792.10 that McMahon is going after is to cover Callaway’s contract and worker’s comp in addition to Luck’s compensation from March 14th through April 9th.
The following was noted in the suit: “Luck knowingly and deliberately deceived me – repeatedly – throughout the Callaway situation, which made me question whether I could continue to trust Luck to be the commissioner and CEO of the XFL.”
The Rock and his partners have bought the pro football league with the idea that it will return in 2022.
