WWE nixed SmackDown storyline due to Steve Cutler’s release

Steve Cutler was released by WWE last week after Vince McMahon was reportedly upset with him testing positive for COVID-19 after attending a New Year’s Eve party.

Deonna Purrazzo, his girlfriend, later came out with a series of tweets addressing the situation. It turns out that there is more to this story as his departure nixed a storyline on the SmackDown brand.

Dave Meltzer noted on today’s Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE had plans to do a six-man feud that would see Rey Mysterio, Dominik Mysterio, and Murphy against Baron Corbin and his Knights of the Lone Wolf (Cutler & Wesley Blake). When Cutler was fired, WWE had to nix the storyline and now Blake nor Murphy doesn’t have a spot on TV at the moment. Cutler is also the only WWE star to be fired due to testing positive for COVID-19.

Meltzer noted that Cutler originally had a spot and Bryan Alvarez pointed out how the Knights of the Lone Wolf were on TV for two weeks before they disappeared. Meltzer noted the reason they disappeared from TV was due to Cutler testing positive.

“He’s [Cutler] out, he’s now a free agent. He [Murphy] isn’t being used because there is no spot for him. They booked him into this thing with Aalyah and now they haven’t figured out how get out of it. It was gonna be Rey Mysterio, Dominik Mysterio, and Murphy against Corbin, Wesley Blake, and Steve Cutler. Well, you take Wesley Blake and Steve Cutler out then there’s no spot for Murphy unless you wanna make these Dominik Mysterio matches 3 on 1 instead of 2 on 1. They decided to go with the 2 on 1.”
