Impact Wrestling is pushing hard to sign someone who many feel was underutilized in WWE.
Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Impact is making a “major play” for the man formerly known as Buddy Murphy.
Murphy is well-regarded by his peers as an excellent worker and the feeling among many is that he could be a star outside of WWE. Late last year it appeared that he was about to get a push until suddenly the rug was pulled from under him.
Murphy was involved in a storyline with the Mysterio family and Seth Rollins that saw Murphy being paired with Aalyah Mysterio. Murphy told Chris Van Vliet this week that he felt uncomfortable kissing Aalyah because of the age difference but both Aalyah and Rey both were fine with the idea and so he went along with it.
Murphy told Van Vliet that it was Bruce Prichard that told him that plans for the storyline were being dropped cold. A few months later, WWE teased having Murphy and Rollins getting back on good terms again but that was also dropped and Murphy ended up getting released.
At this point, it’s not clear if Murphy has signed with Impact but there are some former WWE stars expected at Slammiversary on Saturday night. It’s not clear if AEW has had talks with Murphy.
