John Cena opens up on his WWE return

John Cena made his return at the WWE Money in the Bank pay-per-view to start his feud with Universal Champion Roman Reigns at SummerSlam.

The former WWE Champion had been away since last year after he lost to Bray Wyatt in the Firefly Funhouse match at WrestleMania 36 while filming various movie projects such as The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and Vacation Friends.

Cena spoke with Forbes about the return and started out noting that he didn’t want to leave WWE in the first place, but was faced with a bold choice of entertaining people through movies and television.

With that decision, he knew he couldn’t be full-time as an in-ring wrestler for WWE. “You can’t have matches because the insurance companies bound you to the production. That’s very fair terms.”

He continued by noting that he’s been filming a lot of movies as of late, but this is the first time that he got a break.

“I have this block of time, so instead of taking a deep breath and kind of letting it all sink in, I wanted to go home and see my family in WWE, so back to the ring I go!”

Cena, who is advertised for the SmackDown event at MSG in September, was asked about potentially wrestling more matches at SummerSlam.

“Man, never say never about the WWE. Like I said, I had a month to myself and here I am back in a ring. So maybe if I get another month to catch my breath, I’ll hopefully make another visit back.”

WWE holds the SummerSlam pay-per-view event on Saturday, August 21 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada at Allegiant Stadium. Despite rumors of the show moving back to the ThunderDome, the show is still on track to place in front of live fans.
