Ron Reese says Giant Gonzalez was supposed to play the role of The Yeti in WCW

Former WCW star Ron Reese (aka The Yeti) was interviewed on the Get Funk’d podcast. Here are some highlights from the interview:

Ron Reese talking about the Yeti character and who was originally supposed to play that character:

“They (WCW) sent me down there (The Power Plant). They said, ‘You suck. We’re going to get you good.’ I went down there and they beat the crap out of me. Paul Wight was down there when I first started out. They were going to do this big deal coming up with the giants. They wanted to have all three giants in the ring at that PPV after the Yeti at Halloween Havoc. Giant Gonzalez was supposed to be the Yeti in that PPV. One week before the PPV, he got sick and couldn’t do it, and went back to, I believe, Columbia. So they were like, ‘Hey Tiger, welcome to the big leagues.’ I went down and did the Dungeon of Doom.”

“Then they had the PPV with the 60 man Battle Royal. I got thrown out first, and that was it. The problem was when they came to do the Battle Royal, they didn’t have the guy who put the Yeti outfit on me, so I had to be the Yeti Ninja which was another gimmick. I was supposed to be the Yeti Ninja in Japan. It was going to be the 3 giants in there. It was going to be Paul Wight, Giant Gonzalez, and me. Paul was going to be The Giant. Giant Gonzalez was going to be The Yeti, and I was going to be The Giant Ninja. The idea was I was going to go to Japan and wrestle as The Giant Ninja. It was such a sh*t show at Halloween Havoc that they were like, ‘Yea, don’t worry about it.”

Reese was asked why he never went to WWE:

“It’s funny. I was talking to WWE, and they were really high with me. They said, ‘We have some good stuff for you. We’re really interested in bringing you up. Everything is going to be really good.’ There was some talk about doing some bodyguard work for Christian and Edge. I was really excited about it, then all of a sudden, they stopped calling.”
