Backstage news on why Impact Wrestling fired Matt Striker

Matt Striker’s tenure as a commentator in Impact Wrestling came to an end this week as he announced in a now-deleted message on his Twitter account that he was done with the promotion. Striker noted he was disappointed with the decision and enjoyed the wrestlers in the company.

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that “management wasn’t happy with his performance” and this move was something that had been in the works for months. It’s still unclear who will replace him in this role, but with Impact holding its Hard To Kill PPV event this Saturday and taping TV on Sunday, a new announcer will be revealed shortly.

Impact brought in Striker to replace Josh Mathews on commentary in early 2021 when Mathews was promoted. Striker worked alongside D’Lo Brown. In addition to working for Impact, he has done commentary on AAA’s English-language feed including last month’s Triplemania Regia event.

However, Striker did get criticism from fans because he wasn’t familiar with some of the names and storylines on the show. Prior to his run with Impact, he also did commentary for WWE and Lucha Underground.
