WWE’s top star will not be at this year’s Money In The Bank pay-per-view.
Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso first reported that WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns will not be on the show. Dave Meltzer has also confirmed the news. Barrasso stated that plans for Reigns were scrapped once they moved from Allegiant Stadium to the smaller and indoor T-Mobile Arena.
It’s not clear why he is no longer scheduled for the show. Reigns was originally scheduled to wrestle Riddle at MITB, Randy Orton at SummerSlam, and Drew McIntyre at Clash at the Castle. The match with McIntyre is pretty much confirmed since McIntyre laid down a challenge last Friday for the match in September. Orton vs. Reigns still appears to be on but the Riddle match, if it happens, would have to take place at a different show.
Money In The Bank is considered a “big 5” show for the company so they will need some star power at the top of the card. Cody Rhodes was pushed as the top star for that show in advertising and although he teased that he would still be involved in the MITB Ladder Match, there are questions as to if he could get cleared for that show following surgery for his torn pec.
Reigns’ new WWE contract calls for him to wrestle less on house shows, TV and pay-per-view events. Money In The Bank is scheduled for July 2nd from Las Vegas, NV.
