The story of the Von Erich family is slated to be told on the big screen as Deadline reported today that Zac Efron is to star in “The Iron Claw” film.
The drama is set to be financed and produced by A24 while Sean Durkin, who wrote the script and will be directing it. Producing alongside A24 are Tessa Ross, Derrin Schlesinger, and Harrison Huffman. The film was developed by House Productions with the support of Access Entertainment, and BBC Films.
The family was chronicled on VICE’s Dark Side of the Ring. They were iconic in Texas and while they had a ton of success in wrestling, they also experienced the lowest of the lows.
Fritz Von Erich, the father of the wrestling family, had five of his six sons predecease him. Jack Jr. was accidentally shocked and drowned in a puddle at the age of 6 in 1959. In 1984, David Von Erich died in a Tokyo hotel at the age of 25. Mike, Chris, and Kerry all committed suicide.
Mike passed away in 1987 at the age of 23, Chris shot himself in the head in 1991 at the age of 21, and Kerry shot himself in 1993 at the age of 33. Kevin Von Erich is the last surviving son.
