Original plans for Jon Moxley at AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door

Jon Moxley vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi for the interim AEW World Heavyweight Championship will headline Sunday’s AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door pay-per-view event.

The original main event was CM Punk defending the AEW World Heavyweight Title against Tanahashi, but that was nixed when Punk suffered a foot injury and had to get surgery.

AEW booked an interim title series with the finals taking place at this show where Moxley qualified for the match after defeating Kyle O’Reilly while Tanahashi won his qualifying bout at Dominion.

Shota Umino & Wheeler Yuta & Eddie Kingston vs. Chris Jericho & Sammy Guevara & Minoru Suzuki will also take place at Forbidden Door.

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the original plan was for Moxley to be in the six-man tag team match listed above, which is why Umino is in there as Moxley’s protege.

The belief is once Punk is ready to return then he will face the interim AEW World Heavyweight Champion to crown the undisputed AEW World Champion.
