Backstage news on WWE’s plans for CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns

The list of dream matches was on the minds of many fans following CM Punk’s return to WWE at Survivor Series after being away from the company for nearly a decade. There are plenty of new wrestlers for Punk to work with going forward.

First feud

It’s clear that WWE is building to Punk vs. World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins in the near future. That’s why Rollins lost his cool in character following Punk’s arrival at Survivor Series, flipping him off and cursing at him.

Rollins continued the storyline at a house show the following night and even noted in his promo on Monday Night Raw two nights later that he wouldn’t waste his time on Punk. Rollins knew moments before going out alongside the other main eventers of Survivor Series that Punk was coming out following their match.

The big one

As previously reported by Sports Illustrated, after Punk vs. Rollins, the direction is Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns vs. Punk.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that fans will be waiting a while to see Punk take on Reigns.

Meltzer wrote, “For right now, the plan is to take a lot of time before getting there. The feeling right now is that will be gigantic at the time they choose to get there. Whether it results in [Paul] Heyman leaving Reigns for Punk and Punk going heel and Reigns face, which was the speculation we got, there are multiple different ways to approach that.”

Meltzer added that Cody Rhodes vs. Reigns and Rollins vs. Punk are viable for WrestleMania 40.
