WWE management does not see Sami Zayn as a WrestleMania headliner

The build for the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view starts this week and it appears that WWE is moving forward with plans for Sami Zayn vs. Roman Reigns in Montreal.

This is a huge match for Zayn because he will be wrestling in front of his hometown fans and it’s the highest profile match of his career but, as was noted earlier, there are those in the company who now feel that Zayn should headline WrestleMania.

The Zayn-Bloodline story was only supposed to last a few weeks and organically, he has become the most popular babyface in the company but Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that both Vince McMahon and Triple H do not see Zayn as a WrestleMania headliner.

It should be noted that in the past, WWE has listened to fan reactions and changed course. Kofi Kingston won the WWE Championship at WrestleMania a few years ago even though that was not the original plan and Daniel Bryan (Bryan Danielson) was pushed as a top guy at WrestleMania XXX.

But neither was seen as “the guy” and they were never pushed as “the face” of the company. Zayn acknowledged during his interview with Ariel Helwani that he could win the title for a few months but because he doesn’t look like Brock Lesnar or John Cena or Reigns, he would never be treated as the guy to carry WWE.

It’s possible that WWE will call an audible and have Zayn challenge Reigns at WrestleMania but at this point, it seems unlikely.
