Adam Copeland Comments on WWE’s Reaction to His Decision to Leave

Due to the tribalism in wrestling among some fans, people were happy to see Adam Copeland jump from WWE to AEW, while others were not on Sunday night when the former Edge made his promotional debut at the AEW WrestleDream pay-per-view event.

The WWE Hall of Famer saved Sting and Darby Allin from an attack by Luchasaurus, Christian Cage, and Nick Wayne. His WWE deal expired last month.

While speaking with Sports Illustrated, Copeland remembered thinking during his last WWE match that it could be the last time he performed in a WWE ring.

“Halfway through the match with Sheamus in Toronto, I was thinking, ‘This is probably my last WWE match,’” said Copeland. “I also started thinking, right then, ‘There is a great chance I retire after this.’ The WWE gave me that night, and I’ll hold it with me until I die. I was having so much fun. That was the perfect ending.”

Copeland shared the reaction from WWE regarding his decision to leave and go to AEW. He’s thankful for what WWE did for him, but they reached a place where they did everything they could together.

“And I guarantee you this–they’re not mad. I’m not mad. I’ve received so many texts from the office, from the travel department, from the talent relations department, from the music department, from the performers, from the big suits, and none of them are mad. They’re happy for me. And I’m happy. They’re going to continue to crush it, too. And I have more of an opportunity to help the entire wrestling business in AEW.

Copeland also teased a match at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom against Kazuchika Okada.

“I’ve never wrestled at Wrestle Kingdom,” said Copeland. “I’ve never wrestled at Tokyo Dome. How about a match against Kazuchika Okada? That would be pretty cool. I’m pretty excited by that.”

Copeland will do a promo on tonight’s AEW Dynamite before wrestling Luchasaurus next Tuesday.
