In an exclusive for WrestlingNews.co, Steve Fall interviewed former NWA Women’s Champion Kamille. She talked about losing the title, what’s next for her in pro wrestling, and more. Scroll down to watch the entire interview.
Kamille on losing the NWA Women’s Championship:
“I want to say it was after Nuff Said, which I think was like in February, I was talking to Pat Kenney on the phone about like, a reimbursement or something random. I just said, ‘It’s time for me to lose the title.’ It’s time. I went through almost every girl in the division. I had it for, at that point, it was almost about to hit the two-year mark. I was like, ‘I feel like I’m as over as I’m going to be as a champion’, and I was just like, ‘It’s time to highlight someone else and get someone else over.’ I did say at that time, I was like, and I feel like I really want it to be Kenzie. I said, ‘I think Kenzie is next.’ Obviously she wrestled before the NWA, obviously, but this was the first company she’s ever been signed to. She’s sort of a NWA homegrown talent, and little fun fact, she was my first title defense with my championship reign. So I was like, what better little nugget than that. I just put that out there and I said I feel like the people, the NWA fans, need a break from me for a little bit. They just need a little break from me. I need to kind of refresh, regroup, and figure something else out because I mean, eventually things get, you know, I don’t know if complacent is the word, but it’s just like, ‘Oh, okay, she’s gonna win.’ So I was just like, it was time. Plain and simple it was time and I couldn’t be more than happy that I got to pass it to Kenzie Paige. I do wish that, you know, I said that back in like February, like seven months ago, I do wish we had a little better of a story leading into it because about that point, me and Markova, we hadn’t even touched for a match. So, you know, fast forward to NWA 75, that was our third title match against each other. So like, I do think it could, like Markova or Kenzie, either one would have been great to take my place. I mean, Markova is a frickin’ ass kicker and if she would have won it, she would have earned every bit of that as well and we had a great story, you know, feud going into that. So I kind of wish that me and Kenzie would have had that going into it, but Kenzie had a great comeback story that night. She lost her TV title and then entered herself into the gauntlet to overcome all the girls because she started in the beginning and won. I mean, either way, I feel like it was a great outcome.”
“When I first got the title, my goal in my head was like it’d be so cool to have it for a year. I was like, that is huge to have it for a year. It would give me time to grow into being a champion and really prove myself. So once I hit the year, I don’t say I didn’t care because obviously I care, but then I was like, okay, whatever happens, happens, and then it just kept going and going. Then I got to the point where I passed June Byers for that number five spot, and so I etched my name in literal history by being in the top five. I mean, that belt has been a thing since 1948. It’s a big deal.”
Kamille on if she has thoughts of going to another company to wrestle or if there is a challenge she wants to achieve:
“Yeah, definitely. It kind of goes back to what I just said, like, first year of being a champion, all about proving myself, right? Second year, my reign was when I started, and I think the fans started to recognize my abilities, what I can do, what I can offer, and that’s when you start realizing like, yeah, I have really grown to this position where I would be like a good catch, a good acquisition for any company to have, to use me in whichever way they choose and I have built that through the NWA and I’m very grateful for that confidence to know I can do well anywhere, the highest of high leagues or on an indie show in an armory. I have that talent to be able to make that happen. Unfortunately, that whole year, you get comments all the time, like, ‘Go here, go here, go here.’ Well everybody, there is something called a contract. I don’t know if they forget it, or if they fantasy-book in their heads or whatever, but, I have been under contract, and that’s that. But when it comes to going somewhere else, challenging myself, I’ve been with the NWA for five years now. In October, it will literally be exactly five years. I’m 30 years old. I think that if there is a time to take a risk and bet on myself, now’s the time.”
Kamille on starring in a movie:
“I can’t really barely give you cliff notes because I’ll be looked at as a scab, I believe they call it, if I am promoting the movie, but when I am allowed to promote and talk about it, you will be the first one to do the interview and I’ll talk all about the movie. I think it’s totally fine to just say that it was very unexpected, really freakin’ crazy how it happened. Basically, I think this is fine to say. Basically, they were filming in Louisville, which is like three hours from where I live. Taryn Terrell, my friend Taryn, she does some stunt work and her husband’s in stunts and stuff. I just sent in my pictures for stunt work and then I can’t get into more specifics than that, but pictures for stunt work turned into somehow, I think I might be the first person ever to have that big of a role without having a headshot. I’m on set with some very well known people in the acting industry and they are just saying to me, ‘You’re a natural at this. I can’t believe this is your first movie. You gotta do something with this.’ I was like, ‘Okay.’ I haven’t seen it. I don’t know what the hell I did. I just tried my best. You know what I mean? I’ll listen to them. They know what they’re talking about. I mean, frickin’ Clint Eastwood’s daughter over there. If she gives me the check of approval, then I’m going with it. So yeah, I’ve got now representation on the East Coast. I have meetings in a few weeks for representation on the West Coast, and who knows?”
On what’s next for Kamille:
“I just think that I’ve done all I can and proven all I can prove in the NWA, at least as a singles competitor. So we’ll see what happens from there, how my character can evolve. Maybe I’ll join a tag team? Who knows? But as a singles competitor in NWA, I, at least for a long while, have nothing left to prove. So yeah, we’ll just have to see where this wrestling life, Hollywood life, who knows, takes me.”
