WWE held two house shows over the weekend for the NXT brand in Florida – Tampa and Citrus Springs ahead of tonight’s NXT Heatwave special on the USA Network.
The Saturday night show in Tampa featured Williams scoring a big upset win over top NXT star Bron Breakker with a roll-up. This comes at a time when WWE has been pushing Williams as a singles star since splitting away from NXT Champion Carmelo Hayes a few weeks ago on television.
On tonight’s NXT Heatwave special on the USA Network, Williams will battle Ilja Dragunov.
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez talked about the big win and the noticeable push Williams has been getting.
Meltzer: “They’re [WWE] giving Trick a pretty big push. He beat Bron Breakker at one of the house shows this weekend.”
Bryan Alvarez: “Really? They had Trick Williams beat Bron Breakker?”
Meltzer: “Yeah, they were in Tampa and Citrus Springs. I think it was in Tampa. Teah, impromptu challenge, and he beat him. For what they want, Trick Williams has a great deal of potential. He’s a great talker, he has a look, and the only thing is he’s not a great wrestler, but an athlete. I think the hope is that they’re not rushing him up in time, which is a good thing. If they brought him up right now, he’d be one of those guys who’d get a stigma of failure on him, so they’re not rushing him up.”
