Backstage news on how WWE evaluates NXT stars for main roster call ups

Triple H has mostly kept the system that Vince McMahon had in place for the way the company evaluates NXT stars when thinking about calling them up to the main roster. When WWE wants to get a different look at talent, they will bring them to Raw or SmackDown where talent works dark matches or the Main Event taping.

Fightful Select reports there have been pitches for numerous NXT talent to be called up to the WWE main roster, although no new names were revealed.

An NXT source indicated that “WWE higher-ups feel it gives them a more accurate reflection of how a talent would immediately connect with a main roster audience since they’re largely working in front of the same few hundred people on weekly NXT TV.”

It doesn’t mean there’s been a pitch for an NXT star to be called up to the main roster just because they were used on Main Event. Talent views working Main Event as a reward.

As previously reported, Cameron Grimes was considered for an NXT call up, but fans are still waiting to see that happen. After speaking with several WWE staff members, they said Grimes is a natural fit on the main roster. One source noted that he has been working for the company for over five years and is familiar with producer Shane Helms, who works on Raw and SmackDown.

Von Wagner’s name was mentioned as someone who has been pitched for a possible call up in the past. Last year, Wagner was used as the bodyguard for on-screen authority figure Adam Pearce. He only appeared for one episode and was sent back to NXT. At the time, it was reported that Wagner didn’t stay in this role due to Vince McMahon not liking it.

The report stated there will be a slower and more steady flow of NXT talent brought up to the main roster moving forward, and it’s expected that there will be fewer years-long evaluation periods in NXT.
