While WWE is hoping to have The Rock back for WrestleMania 39 for a match against Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, there’s also been speculation that if that match can’t happen, Cody Rhodes may be in line for this title match at the show by winning the 2023 Men’s Royal Rumble match.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that there had been discussions about Reigns working both nights of WrestleMania 39. Meltzer wrote:
“One of the things talked about internally in WWE is for Reigns to wrestle both nights at Mania, with the working ideas being Cody Rhodes and Dwayne Johnson. Nothing is definite and actually today the best bet is that it won’t take place like that. There is also talk of splitting up the titles so Raw has a world champion after Mania.”
WWE wants to have plans finalized before mid-January, and this idea of Reigns potentially wrestling on both nights of Mania is just talk right now and not set in stone.
Reigns last defended his title against Logan Paul at the Crown Jewel premium live event. At Survivor Series, Reigns, The Usos, Solo Sikoa & Sami Zayn defeated the Brawling Brutes, Drew McIntyre & Kevin Owens in a Men’s WarGames bout.
