MJF lost in a squash match to Wardlow at the Double Or Nothing event, and after the match, it looked like AEW was writing him off television as they did a stretcher angle. However, the following Wednesday on Dynamite, MJF did a work/shoot promo where he expressed his frustration with the promotion, demanded that AEW President Tony Khan fire him, and called him a mark.
It’s similar to what Brian Pillman did in the 1990s when he was in contract talks with WWE and WCW to get the maximum amount of money possible. In the case of Pillman, he convinced Eric Bischoff to release him for real. MJF has expressed interest in going to WWE in 2024 when his contract expires with AEW.
Since that promo, MJF hasn’t been seen or even mentioned on AEW television. He was also removed from the AEW talent roster.
As reported last week by Fightful Select, those close to MJF said he has not been in communication whatsoever. People in AEW are also saying they have not heard Khan discuss MJF since the memorable promo, and some people still believe that he is on his way out of the promotion.
The rumor going around is that Khan was going to have MJF feud with World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk, but Punk suffered an injury, and MJF’s return to AEW television has been delayed.
