Backstage News On Stephanie Vaquer Signing With WWE Over AEW

Stephanie Vaquer is leaving CMLL and NJPW for WWE after receiving interest from AEW. She has been stripped of the CMLL World and Tag Team Titles.

As previously reported, she is WWE-bound, with head of NXT creative Shawn Michaels seemingly confirming on social media. She got on WWE’s radar after she dropped the NJPW Strong Women’s Title to Mercedes Mone at Forbidden Door last month. Vaquer had been praised leading into and coming out of the bout.

Dave Meltzer previously reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that CMLL and NJPW were upset with how Vaquer handled her departure, as she had planned dates with them and other promotions that she canceled to go to WWE. CMLL has let talent out of their deals early should they have a contract offer from a US-based promotion, as long as they agree to drop titles and finish up any booking commitments they have.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that One person in WWE said she was offered “a tremendous contract” on July 7th, as they were aware of the AEW offer.

Meltzer wrote, “The belief is that WWE will introduce Vaquer to the crowd in Mexico City on 7/13 for the show at Arena Ciudad. She would likely start in NXT.”

Several sources close to the situation said that she didn’t seriously consider AEW because she grew up watching WWE as a child and wanted to join the promotion. She previously had a tryout in 2018.
