Malakai Black Is Not Expected Back In AEW

Malakai Black’s time in AEW is over.

During Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite, Will Ospreay defeated Buddy Matthews. After the match, Ospreay encouraged him to step out of the shadow of Black, leading to speculation about Black’s status with the promotion.

This was hours after it was announced Black will be in action for Coastal Championship Wrestling’s Havoc & Haze 9 in Tampa on Saturday, January 11, 2025. He’ll do so when he wrestles Irion.

Fightful Select reported those in AEW believed Black was finishing up or had already finished up with the promotion. AEW CEO Tony Khan had previously noted that he had Black under contract until 2027.

The latest update came from Fightful today, noting that Black isn’t expected to be back in AEW. As of this writing, Black is still listed on AEW’s official website. Black hasn’t wrestled for AEW since Full Gear.
