Goldberg’s WWE Return Is Getting Closer

Talk of WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg stepping back into a WWE ring for his anticipated retirement match has gained new momentum. According to a report from WrestleVotes today, May 8, 2025, the legendary powerhouse’s name is once again part of internal discussions within WWE.

WrestleVotes reported, “According to multiple sources, Goldberg’s name has been floated internally within WWE over the past week — the first time since his Bad Blood appearance and his interactions with Gunther. Feels like the inevitable return is nearing.” This marks the first significant sign of potential planning for Goldberg’s comeback since late last year.

The mention of his Bad Blood appearance is crucial context. Goldberg has been publicly stating his intention to have one final match in 2025, fulfilling a promise reportedly made to him by WWE CCO Paul “Triple H” Levesque for a proper retirement bout after his last match against Roman Reigns in 2022 ended unsatisfactorily for him.

While Goldberg remained off television for most of 2024, he made a memorable non-wrestling appearance at the WWE Bad Blood premium live event on October 5, 2024, in his hometown of Atlanta. Sitting ringside with his family, Goldberg was verbally targeted by the dominant then-World Heavyweight Champion, GUNTHER.

GUNTHER’s taunts escalated, specifically mentioning Goldberg’s son, which provoked the Hall of Famer immensely. Goldberg jumped the barricade to confront “The Ring General” before security swarmed the area to separate the two behemoths, strongly teasing a future clash between the past and present titans.

Since that intense confrontation, speculation has centered on GUNTHER being the logical final opponent for Goldberg’s farewell match. Goldberg himself has acknowledged the logic and built-in “heat” for that potential matchup, viewing it as a potential passing of the torch.

While Goldberg has confirmed he is training and preparing for a 2025 in-ring return, potentially undergoing stem cell treatments to aid recovery, no official date or opponent has been announced by WWE. Recent rumors suggesting a surprise appearance at this weekend’s Backlash event seem unlikely based on other reports.
