Jeff Cobb’s official WWE ring name is J.C. Mateo, but that doesn’t mean the company didn’t consider a different name for him.
This comes after Cobb was initially referred to by his well-known name, Jeff Cobb, during his recent WWE pay-per-view debut at Backlash 2025. It was noted by Big E around that time that “Jeff Cobb” might not be his final on-screen moniker.
Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that another name, “J.C. Matanza,” was discussed internally. This name was considered as “an insider reference since Cobb’s first major break was as Matanza Cueto in Lucha Underground.”
However, potential rights issues complicated this option, as Meltzer explained, “While AAA was an investor in Lucha Underground they weren’t owners and in purchasing AAA, that wasn’t a purchase of Lucha Underground tapes or intellectual property.” Adding another layer, “Cobb was said to not like that name” either.
