Shawn Michaels Explains Why He Doesn’t Regret His Infamous Last Match

While many fans, critics, and even his opponents view the D-Generation X vs. Brothers of Destruction match from Crown Jewel 2018 as a disaster, Shawn Michaels has a surprisingly different take on it. The WWE Hall of Famer stated that he is not bothered by the match’s negative reputation and, in a way, takes “a sense of pride” in how it turned out.

A Blemished Record?

On The Undertaker’s Six Feet Under podcast, the two legends discussed the infamous match, which was Michaels’ first and only match after retiring in 2010. While The Undertaker called it a “train wreck,” Michaels explained why he sees it differently.

A Fittingly “Bonkers” Ending

Michaels argued that the chaotic and messy nature of the match was a fittingly “bonkers” end for a group like DX and for his “Heartbreak Kid” character, who he believes shouldn’t have a perfect storybook ending.

“It so doesn’t bother me. I don’t care… if that’s going to be the one out of the whatever the 599 that went fantastic. You put one blemish on it and that’s gonna I could care… You couldn’t. No one could badger me enough to make me feel bad about that. I’m sorry… I almost take that as a sense of pride, because I don’t know. I go like you have to, I don’t know. Think about the life I’ve lived. I don’t sort of like winning my last match. You can’t be the Heartbreak Kid and win your last match… I can’t be a member of DX and not have that last match just be completely freaking bonkers. I don’t know. It’s like, said, I’m, I don’t know, for whatever, I think I’ll say this. It’s because, through the help of you and countless other guys, I’m so proud of the rest of it. There’s just, there’s just, there’s not enough. There’s not enough shame in this world to make me feel like, you know, I mean, I don’t know.”

The tag team match at Crown Jewel 2018 remains Shawn Michaels’ final in-ring performance. He has since transitioned into a full-time backstage role with WWE, where he currently serves as the Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative.
