WWE superstar CM Punk, a central figure in the new “WWE: Unreal” docuseries, has opened up about his current mindset as a veteran performer. In a new interview, he explained why he believes there is now more value in a loss than in a win at this stage of his career.
A ‘Player-Coach’ Mentality
Speaking with Allenownz Wrasslin, Punk was asked about the docuseries showing his name being pitched for major wins like the Royal Rumble. He said that while it “means a lot” to be trusted by the writers, his perspective on winning has changed.
“I think it’s easy to look at it from the outside perspective. Of course, it sounds great. ‘Hey, you’re going to win and you’re going to beat everybody,’ but I’m at the point in my career where I think there’s more story to tell, and there’s more depth in a loss. There’s more depth than rebounding from something,” he said.
‘Turn That Sh*t Gold’
Punk used his own triceps tear from 2024 as a prime example of his philosophy. He described how he turned a devastating injury into an opportunity to build a new story and lead by example for the younger talent in the locker room.
“I looked at it like an opportunity… Turn it into the best thing that’s ever happened to you, right? Turn that sh*t gold. I did that, and that’s how I lead by example,” Punk explained. “That’s how I can use my life experiences and talk to somebody else who has, you know, first time they’ve been injured… They can look at me and trust me to know that what I’m saying is fact, because they’ve seen it.”
Punk’s veteran philosophy will be put to the ultimate test this weekend at the two-night SummerSlam premium live event. He is scheduled to step into the ring with World Heavyweight Champion, GUNTHER, in what many consider a dream match. The bout is expected to be one of the main events of the weekend at MetLife Stadium.
