Backstage News On How WWE Kept Brock Lesnar’s SummerSlam Return A Secret

The shocking return of Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam was a well-kept secret, with a new report from Fightful detailing the extreme lengths WWE went to in order to hide “The Beast Incarnate” and preserve the surprise.

How WWE Kept The Return A Secret

According to the report, it is believed that Lesnar was flown privately into Teterboro airport in New Jersey on Saturday and was “hid throughout the day” to avoid being seen. The plans for the main event between Cody Rhodes and John Cena were also kept very quiet, with many writers and producers not being clued in on the finish or the post-match angle. Many backstage who sensed a surprise was coming reportedly speculated it might be The Rock, not Lesnar.

Backstage Atmosphere And Media Changes

The report notes that sources backstage could tell “something was up based on what people weren’t saying as opposed to what was said.” The intense secrecy was also reflected in WWE’s decision to cancel its traditional weekend media press conferences, a move that media members suspected was related to hiding a major surprise.

The elaborate efforts to hide Lesnar’s return were to facilitate his attack on John Cena after the main event. It is now planned for Lesnar to enter a program with Cena, which will be a major part of Cena’s ongoing retirement tour.
