The World Heavyweight Championship match between Seth Rollins and LA Knight that took place on last night’s Monday Night Raw was originally considered for a much bigger stage. A new report has revealed that the bout was at one point planned for Night Two of SummerSlam.
Scrapped Seth Rollins vs. LA Knight SummerSlam Plan
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed details of an early version of the SummerSlam card. The tentative plan was for the new World Heavyweight Champion to have a quick turnaround for his first title defense.
“On the original card they were considering—there was like an asterisk, you know—they were considering Seth and LA Knight in a title match on the Sunday show, where, you know, he’d win the title on Saturday and defend it on Sunday,” Meltzer said.
The Pivotal LA Knight Raw Match
Ultimately, WWE changed course, and the championship match was moved to last night’s post-SummerSlam episode of Raw with no prior advertising. The match ended in a disqualification after CM Punk interfered and attacked the new champion, allowing Rollins to retain the title. Meltzer noted that while the SummerSlam idea was considered, a match between Rollins and Knight was planned on Raw for several weeks beforehand.
With CM Punk interfering to continue his issues with the new champion, Seth Rollins, and LA Knight having a legitimate claim to a rematch due to the finish, a three-way feud between the superstars appears to be the new direction for the main event scene on Monday nights.
