A new report suggests that WWE is looking to bring a legendary and controversial figure from the Monday Night Wars back into the fold. According to WrestleVotes, there is “strong interest” within WWE to sign former WCW and AAA star Konnan to a legends contract.
For decades, Konnan has had a distant, and at times critical, relationship with WWE. He was a key figure in WCW as a member of both the nWo and the Latino World Order (LWO) and has been a major creative force in AAA Lucha Libre for many years. His outspoken nature on his popular podcast has made a potential partnership with WWE seem unlikely until now.
Strong Interest in a Legends Deal
The report from WrestleVotes Radio states that WWE is actively discussing a legends deal for the icon. It is noted that this deal would be structured to allow him to continue his current work with the recently acquired AAA promotion.
“WWE is said to have strong interest in signing Konnan to a legends deal, separate from his ongoing involvement with AAA.. TC Konnan has been distant from the WWE for a very long time. He’s been involved with Triple A. He has his own podcast. He’s been a little outspoken, but nothing crazy. Just don’t think people ever saw this coming. Now that they’re with AAA, it’s a little easier.”
The Merchandise
The primary motivation behind the reported interest appears to be coming from WWE’s marketing department. The company sees a significant opportunity to produce merchandise based on Konnan’s iconic and influential career.
“We’re told there is genuine interest from the marketing side, particularly around producing Konnan merchandise, including shirts, action figures and other collectibles.”
WWE’s recent acquisition of AAA, where Konnan serves as a major backstage figure and on-screen talent, has opened the door for this potential partnership. With the company now owning the AAA tape library and looking to expand its presence in the Lucha Libre market, bringing in one of its most recognizable figures makes strategic sense. Konnan’s nWo and LWO-era looks are fondly remembered by fans of the Attitude Era, and merchandise based on those characters would likely be a major seller for the nostalgia-focused collectors’ market.
