On the “Mic Check with Ken Anderson” podcast, Dylan Postl (Hornswoggle) shared the behind-the-scenes story of how he became Vince McMahon’s illegitimate son in one of WWE’s most memorable and bizarre storylines, revealing he found out just minutes before the live reveal on Monday Night Raw.
The Original Plan
The storyline had been building for weeks, with the original plan being for podcast host Ken Anderson (then Mr. Kennedy) to be revealed as McMahon’s son. Anderson was set for a major push before a wellness policy violation led to a 30-day suspension, forcing WWE to scrap the plan just days before the scheduled reveal in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Anderson recounted on the podcast how he was called to Stamford by McMahon and informed of the suspension, which took him out of the storyline completely.
A Last-Minute Change
Postl explained that he showed up to the arena in Green Bay with no idea that his career was about to change forever. “I literally was showing up to Green Bay TV that day to maybe go out for that rehearsal for the Vince’s kid thing,” he said. “And I was like, oh, man, okay, whatever.” He was preparing to head to the airport for an overseas tour immediately after the show.
The Reveal
Just before the segment, Postl was pulled aside by then-producer Bruce Prichard and given the shocking news. “I’m walking out to rehearsal, and Bruce Pritchard comes up to me and he goes, ‘Hey, you got a second?’ I go, ‘yep.’ He goes, ‘give me your phone and whatever else you have on you.’ I go, ‘okay.’ And he goes, ‘You’re the son.’ And I go, ‘F*ck you.’ He goes, ‘Oh, okay.’ He goes, ‘You’re the son,'” Postl recalled.
Hiding Under the Ring
He was immediately sequestered behind the stage and given strict instructions to ensure the surprise was not spoiled. “He goes, ‘You need to stay right here… when we’re done with this rehearsal, you’re going to sneak under the ring. We will get your gear under there with you… do not talk,'” he said. While hiding under the ring, he got a message from the boss himself. “Vince comes on, and he’s like, ‘Hey, Dylan.’ And I was like, ‘oh sh*t, do I answer him?’… I go, ‘Yes, sir.’ He goes. ‘Just wanted to say, congratulations. This could be a lot of fun.'”
A Career-Defining Moment
Postl stated that he had no idea at the time that this shocking storyline would become the defining moment of his decade-long WWE career. “Looking at that now, going, I had no idea that that would be the biggest thing in my career, like, that’s the most… that was the most talked about thing of my career. Easily,” he reflected. “I didn’t think about it that day.” The storyline led to Postl being featured in main event segments, including a memorable appearance at the 15th Anniversary of Raw where he posed for a McMahon family photo, had a pose-down with Hulk Hogan, and poured beer on Vince McMahon.
