In a new interview with The West Sport, Drew McIntyre shared the behind-the-scenes story of his famous “banger after banger” promo on Sheamus, revealing that his close friend and rival was actually the one who came up with the most memorable insult of the exchange.
A Memorable Exchange
The promo, which took place on Monday Night Raw this past April, saw McIntyre run down a list of Sheamus’s accomplishments before stating that it used to be “banger after banger,” but had recently become “burger after burger after burger.” The line, and Sheamus’s legitimate laughter in response, became an instant fan-favorite moment.
Sheamus Wrote the Punchline
McIntyre explained that he was looking for a line to get a genuine reaction out of his friend, but wanted to be careful not to cross a line with a potentially sensitive topic. He came up with a few ideas, but it was Sheamus who provided the perfect punchline. “I mean, you know, Sheamus and I are close and, you know, I think he acknowledged that, you know, he’d probably let himself go a little bit,” McIntyre said. “And he actually got him the line, ‘burger after burger.’ So to be fair, it was his line… He’s all about the banter. He’s all about the laugh. He could recognize that he’d lose some weight.”
All in the Delivery
While Sheamus provided the line, McIntyre took credit for the delivery that caused his friend to break character and laugh on live television. “So I had a good line, and then he came up with a great line, but he didn’t know how I was going to deliver the line,” he explained. “So it was the delivery that made him laugh for real… just looking at him up and down, ‘burger after burger after burger.'”
A Positive Outcome
McIntyre noted that the promo had a positive effect, as Sheamus used it as motivation to get into the best shape of his career. “And to be fair, what did he do? Like he recognized where he was at. He worked hard. He knocked it right off. Got in the best shape of his career,” McIntyre stated. “And some of our other superstars we look up and down the rosters could take a tip from Sheamus.”
